I simply never really practiced it before, I just enjoyed picking it up and doing a race from time to time. For one thing, I didn't really take it seriously because I didn't expect to even come close to the record. But it's not until very recently that I've gotten really good. So generally my main game is Metroid Fusion, and I've been running it for over a decade. Mega Man games often require mashing alongside other inputs, so those are great to learn. After grinding out attempts at Lazy Eye, I definitely improved my button-mashing ability. I used to play Rock Band on Expert just for fun, but at the time I didn't realize you could strum up, too. I've found that games like SH and TIG REALLY help me with my running, and have qualities that could serve as a sort of "external training" for other runners, new and old. If you don't, well then you're probably running the wrong game. You just have to find a level of comfort. Everyone has their own "rhythm" of sorts when speedrunning a game. After a good while of practicing the game, you'll find that you've developed a certain "groove" to the way that you do things in the game. Like RNG patterns, the route must be memorized. While most games are not rhythm games, all games that are spedrun (simply "ran"? I'm still not sure on what the past tense of "speedrun" is.) have some sort of a corresponding "route" to them. Most jumps/falls/other actions are in sync with the music.
They are simply pre-constructed paths and platforms that were built around the corresponding soundtrack of the game. All four (or five, depending on what platform you're playing on) levels have a SET path and design to them. For those of you who don't know, the Impossible Game has no RNG. This applies specifically to The Impossible Game. Every game has a finite point of existence, and therefore can be controlled to a certain degree.

There are a finite number of patterns of obstacles and shapes in the game, and knowing how to deal with them is a key aspect of the game. Yes, it is technically "purely random," but it is a form of LIMITED RNG. Super Hexagon has "RNG", but it really only controls what SETS OF PATTERNS are generated.
